Ivan Kramberger, leader of a small opposition party in newly independent Slovenia, was killed minutes before he was to begin his campaign for president, news reports said Monday.
Radio Slovenia and the Belgrade-based Tanjug news agency said that Kramberger, 56, head of the Homeland People's Party, died late Sunday after being shot by a hunting rifle from about 150 yards away. The radio said that a man was arrested in the shooting and that there apparently was no political motive. It did not give further details.
Tanjug said the shooting occurred in Jurovski Dol, a village near the northern city of Maribor, while Kramberger was on his way to a rally for the beginning of the presidential campaign.
