Ukraine President Leonid Kravchuk on Saturday fired Deputy Prime Minister Volodymyr Lanovoy, who was considered the government's leading economic reformer.

Lanovoy's departure was expected to cause concern among Western financial organizations. He drew up Ukraine's reform program approved this year by the International Monetary Fund.Lanovoy, 39, had threatened to resign Tuesday to protest what he called the government's "economic inertia" but then said he would stay on to fight the conservative forces resisting his market-oriented reforms.
