Academic All-American Dave Madsen and academic all-district Jared Miller head a 38-man contingent of BYU players added to the 1991-92 Academic All-Western Athletic Conference team.

Madsen, a third baseman/pitcher who had a 3.31 grade point average in business, was joined by infielder Darren Averett as the only members of BYU's baseball team named to the Academic All-WAC honor. Miller, who had a 3.3 GPA in mechanical engineering, was one of four basketball players named to the Academic All-WAC honor.Madsen and Miller had earlier been voted to GTE Academic honors by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

The wrestling team, which boasts the nation's top GPA among all NCAA wrestling teams at 3.36, led all BYU teams with eight selections to the latest Academic All-WAC team.

Double winners for BYU were Doug Hobbs, Treaver Hodson, Rick Jaster, Jason Pyrah, David Spence and Chris Yorges in cross country and indoor track. Lance Heppler and Rick McWhorter were double winners in indoor and outdoor track.

The total listing of men's athletic teams named to the Academic All-WAC slate from BYU are: Darren Averett and David Madsen, baseball; Mark Heslop, Jared Miller, and Mark Santiago, basketball; Ryan Rhees, Eric Rustand and Dean Wilson, golf; Jason Brown, Ritchie Ellis and Marc Seid, gymnastics; Jason Hearn, Brandon Hill and Kenneth Kenitzer, swimming; Will Calhoun and Herman Vandecasteele, tennis; Lance Heppler, Doug Hobbs, Treaver Hodson, Rich Jaster, Mike Jones, Rick McWhorter, Jack Mohr, Scott Moon, Jason Pyrah, Matt Snyder, David Spence and Chris Yorges, track; John Allan, Kelton Andersen, Philip Armstrong, Scott Eastmond, Wright Noel, Albert Olsen, Sean Ponce and Robbie Winter, wrestling.

Earlier, 11 football players from BYU were named to the Academic All-WAC honor. Athletes must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Freshmen and transfers in their first year at BYU were not eligible for Academic All-WAC honors.
