House minority whip Newt Gingrich emerged the winner again by a scant 980 votes after a recount in the Republican primary.

Challenger Herman Clark, a former state legislator, picked up 17 votes in Tuesday's recount, but so did Gingrich. The GOP firebrand finished with 35,699 votes, or 51 percent, to Clark's 34,719 votes, or 49 percent.Clark had asked for the recount in five suburban Atlanta counties, citing irregularities during last week's voting. He said Tuesday that he had not yet decided whether to challenge the results in court.

The GOP nominee will face the winner of an Aug. 11 Democratic runoff.
