"The Dream Auction" will take place at the Triad Center on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 6 p.m. for those people who have discretionary income and a sharing heart.
While dining on gourmet delectables such as mesquite-broiled tenderloin of beef with bearnaise sauce and poached Alaskan king salmon from Tom Guinney's Gastronomy, guests will bid for dream vacations and one-of-a-kind collectibles.Beneficiaries of this fund-raising event are the impoverished children who attend the Guadalupe Schools: the Early Learning Center, Pre-School and Voluntary Improvement Program.
Last year's Dream Auction raised almost $70,000 from more than 500 donors. For the upcoming event, the list of underwriters, scholarship providers, patron tables and in-kind donors runs nine pages. Throughout the Salt Lake Valley, individuals, corporations, civic organizations, foundations and religious organizations have combined to assist literacy and language skills of at-risk children.
Underwriters of the Dream Auction are Coors/M&M Distributing, Weight Watchers and Smith's Food & Drug Centers.
Gastronomy's Guinney promises patrons "fresh-fruit tarts, appetizers like broiled shrimp and fresh summer vegetables." The lush, summer picnic will also include mesquite-broiled New York sirloin, cold lobster pasta salad and Hot Shoppe cole slaw.
During the social hour, classical guitarist Alan Sandomir will entertain Dream Auction guests. Dance music and entertainment will be provided by the Saliva Sisters.
Silent and live auctions will tantalize bidders with fantasies such as an "Autumn Aloft" weekend in Park City; a week's stay at a Snowbird condo; two nights' lodging at the Homestead, Wolfcreek Resort, Deer Valley or Wendover.
Gifts for the home will include original oil paintings, ethnic treasures from the Sundance Catalog Co., a microwave oven and a U.S. Senate remembrance from Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah.
Dine in style at Lupo's Restaurant, the Red Iguana, Baci's Trattoria, and splurge with chocolate-chunk cookies - five cases of cookies! And for real indulgence - guests can bid on one dozen chocolate truffles delivered each month for three months.
Sports lovers can try for a Utah Jazz basketball autographed by the 1991-92 team, a Svea backpacking stove, a Wilson golf bag and 21/2 dozen golf balls, tickets for two to Ute basketball and football games, scuba lessons and even a tuneup for a car - sports or otherwise.
Fitness packages, clothing, entertainment and sailing lessons on the Great Salt Lake will also be up for bid.
Tickets for the Dream Auction are $50 for individuals, and tables of 10 are $1,000. The public is invited. For information and reservations, call the Guadalupe Schools at 581-6100.
