JCPenney will open its new department store at the South Towne Center in Sandy on Wednesday, Aug. 5, in what store manager Merle Lenz said will introduce to the Salt Lake market the national retailer's "newest directions in merchandise and service."

Lenz, a 25-year veteran of JCPenney and former manager of the company's store in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, said these include a new system of service desks incorporating "the most advanced electronic transaction equipment."Connected to an in-store computer and the company's national computer network, Lenz said the terminals enable "faster, more accurate customer service and rapid replenishment of merchandise."

The opening of the two-level, 104,504-square-foot store will be preceded by an invitation-only event Tuesday night featuring a buffet, dancing and a musical revue by the Salt Lake Community College Grand Theater.

Lenz said the store will include national brands and JCPenney's private-label merchandise. The store will emphasize fashions and home furnishings. Other departments include luggage, bath and sleep shop, curtains and draperies and active sports apparel. The store will also offer JCPenney catalog service for in-store and at-home telephone shopping.
