Phil J. Purcell, retired insurance executive, passed away peacefully at home on August 17, 1992 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Phil was born February 13, 1914 in Salt Lake City to Phil James and Maybelle Tobin Purcell. He married Shirley Sorenson in 1940; she passed away in 1952. He married Norine M. Ginn in 1959. He was a graduate of Judge Memorial High School, and received his Bachelors Degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1935. He attended post graduate school at the University of San Francisco.Phil had worked in the insurance industry since 1937 and owned and operated Continental Agency Co., one of the oldest independent insurance agencies in the state.
Phil was always active in civic and Catholic Church affairs during his business career. He was an avid golfer an a member of the Salt Lake Country Club since 1945. He loved to travel in his motorhome with Norine.
Phil is survived by his wife, four children; Ann Purcell Perini, San Rafael, Calif.; Philip J. Purcell, Wilmette, Illinois; Paul Purcell, Downers Grove, Illinois; and Patrice Purcell DeCorrevont, Deerfield, Illinois; and one stepson, William Craig Ginn, Albuquerque, New Mexico; three sisters, M. Stephen CSC (Betty) Ventura, Calif.; Mary Ellen Marskey, Chico, Calif.; Patsy Cornwell, Fresno, Calif.; and 19 grandchildren. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Louis and Paul, sisters, Caroline and M. Philippa CSC (Polly).
Phil and his wonderful laugh will greatly missed by his family that loved him dearly and his many friends. His wife, his children and grandchildren will carry forward his legacy of love of family.
Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Thursday, August 20, 1992, 11 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1375 East Spring Lane. A Vigil service will be held Wednesday, 8 p.m. at the church, where friends may call Wednesday 6-8 p.m. Committal service, Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 4th Ave. and "T" Street.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions be made to: Judge Memorial Building Fund or St. Vincent de Paul Foundation.
