Tom Landry says his refusal to join the Dallas Cowboys' Ring of Honor has more to do with Tex Schramm's firing than his own.

"I got out easy. I got out when it happened. Tex didn't. He had to live with them," Landry told The Dallas Morning News. "I think probably the way Tex was handled hurt me more than anybody. When I saw Tex at the press conference, standing back in the corner, that bothered me as much as anything. It's just because (owner Jerry Jones) could have been more gracious."Landry, who coached the Cowboys for 29 years and has two Super Bowl titles among his 270 victories, was fired in 1989. Schramm continued as the Cowboys' president and general manager for nearly two months, but his role was eventually changed and he was forced to participate in some of the sweeping changes. He was present when Landry was fired.

Jones has long said he'd like to induct the franchise-building trio of Landry, Schramm and the late Clint Murchison into the club's Ring of Honor.
