A man who killed an elderly couple, set the woman on fire and went on a spending spree with their life savings of $30,000 has been executed in Virginia's electric chair.

Willie Leroy Jones, 34, went to his death Tuesday night at Greensville Correctional Center after saying, "I love you" to witnesses at the execution.Five hours earlier, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously rejected an appeal. Then Gov. L. Douglas Wilder refused a plea for clemency.

Jones had admitted killing Graham and Myra Adkins in their rural home outside Richmond in 1983.
