In its meeting Tuesday, the City Council:- Voted unanimously to withdraw Block 49 as a site for an Olympic speed-skating oval. Mayor Deedee Corradini had asked last week that the city back away from the site, which now will be used for a mix of housing and retail.

- Set a public hearing for a new bicycle-trail master plan that would connect most areas of the city by the year 2000. The hearing will be Oct. 20 at 6:40 p.m.

- Set a hearing for Oct. 13 at 6:20 p.m. to discuss whether to close Central Street between 4400 West and 4300 West and the crossing at 4150 West and the Union Pacific Railroad track to allow the Western Fiberglass Co. to expand.

- Discussed the future of a 50-year-old post office in Sugar House. The city may try to buy the building for $250,000 and sell it to someone willing to preserve its historic value.

Libraries

Espanol: Children are invited to storytelling in Spanish at the Utah State Fair, featuring Ben Ocon, manager of the Foothill Branch of the Salt Lake City Library. In addition to reading stories in Spanish, he will discuss library services and conduct a bookmark craft workshop. The program is sponsored by Utah Hispanic Magazine.
