Three girls died and two were seriously injured when they jumped from the seventh floor of an apartment building north of Tokyo in an apparent suicide pact, a police spokesman said Friday.
He said the five teenagers, ages 14 and 15, had been sniffing thinner before leaping from the building in Mito, Ibaragi prefecture. He quoted one of the surviving girls as saying, "We were together when somebody suggested we should die together."
"We sniffed some thinner because somebody said that if we were high it would be less scary," she was quoted as saying.
