Several motorists were injured - two critically - Sunday during a three-car collision at the intersection at 4500 S. 700 East.

Witnesses told sheriff's officials that an eastbound Volvo was traveling about 50 mph when it ran a red light and collided with a southbound van. The van was pushed into the northbound lanes and collided head-on with a Ford vehicle that was stopped in the left-hand turn lane. The speed limit posted for that zone is only 40 mph and a prudent speed for conditions would be between 25 and 30 mph, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Andy Burton.

Although there was snow on the road, weather was not considered to be a factor in the accident.

The driver of the Volvo, Edward Pereira, 45, was taken to Cottonwood Hospital and later transported to LDS Hospital. He remained in critical condition Monday, according to a hospital spokesman. Pereira has been living in the Salt Lake area, but was originally from Salida, Colo.

A passenger in the Volvo, Bobbie Nichols, 40, address unknown, was taken to St. Marks Hospital and later transported to University Hospital. She was in critical condition Monday.
