My daughter, a sophomore at Murray High School, enrolled in French III, only to find her classmates who had been taught French I and II by the French I/II teacher were illiterate in the subject and that French III could not be taught as the majority of the students had to be retaught.

Apparently this is due to two things - an inadequate French I/II teacher with antiquated teaching methods and the failure of the principal, associates and the district to monitor and evaluate the quality of education provided by the high school. What is Career Ladder Day all about? Is it not for re-education and evaluation of teachers or is it a vacation? Was it not instituted to enrich, strengthen and produce quality education in the state of Utah?

Murray High (and the district) is a study in contradiction and hypocritical educational practices. It enforces a highly strict no-tardy and reduced absentee policy, with substantial penalties to the students to encourage increased responsibility, attendance and subsequent education among its students.

This I fully support and agree with, yet how can they enforce such a policy and at the same time provide what is literally substandard education to its students?

It is up to the student to educate himself by taking advantage of the educational opportunities provided within Utah's school system. But when the student does and is greeted with indifference as far as the quality and extent of education provided, then the system fails, and that system is Murray School District.
