Defenseman Paul Coffey, a two-time Norris Trophy winner, was dealt by Los Angeles to the Detroit Red Wings Friday in a six-player trade that also returns center Jimmy Carson to the Kings.
Along with Coffey, the Kings sent rookie right wing Jim Hiller and center Sylvain Couturier to Detroit for Carson, center Gary Shuchuk and right wing Marc Potvin.The 31-year-old Coffey, a 10-time All-Star, was acquired by the Kings last February from the Pittsburgh Penguins in a three-team, eight-player deal that also included the Philadelphia Flyers.
Coffey, who has eight goals and 49 assists for 57 points this season, is the NHL's all-time leading scorer among defensemen with 1,171 career points. Coffey also holds all-time records at his position for goals with 326 and assists with 845.
