DIRECTIONS: Follow Mirror Lake highway from Kamas towards Evanston. About 30 miles from Kamas pick up Hayden Fork on the east side of the road. Stillwater joins Hayden flowing into the Bear River near Bear River Ranger Station. A dirt road parallels Stillwater.
DESCRIPTION: Hayden Fork is a small stream that offers easy access from the road. This stream, which features lots of runs and riffles, goes through pines and aspens, some alder and willow flats and some grassy meadows. Stillwater is only about three miles long. Most of this stream meanders through grassy meadows. Both range in size from five to 20 feet wide.
FISH
BROWN, RAINBOW, CUTTHROAT
WHAT WORKS
For Hayden Fork try Renegade, Royal Wulff, Elk Hair Caddis, Adams. Stillwater is good for nymphs fished with a strike indicator. Try Prince Nymph, Hares Ear or smaller green Wolly Buggers.
DETAILS
Hayden Fork is a great place to hit in the fall because the stream is low and clear, and there's no pressure. Can get busy in the summer. There are some well defined pools and good open areas for casting. Stillwater is also good in the fall for the same reasons. This one also has lots of open areas for casting. Because there isn't as much pressure the fish aren't as spooky in the fall.
NOTES
Both of these are good beginner to intermediate fly waters. Best access to Hayden is from Beaver View and Hayden Fork campgrounds. Best access to Stillwater is from Christmas Meadows campgrounds. Nice part about fishing these waters in the fall is the parade of colors put on display. Both are only about an hour and a half from Salt Lake City.
