J.P. Gibbons, former president of Gibbons & Reed General Contractors, now known as Gibbons & Reed Co., died Nov. 14, 1993, in Salt Lake City. He was 77.

Mr. Gibbons became president of the company in 1956, following his father, A.J. Gibbons. The company completed many large construction projects in Hawaii to Maine, including dams, missile construction plants, highways, airport runway extensions, mine tunnels and industrial buildings.In 1958, officials of Pepperdine University, Los Angeles, honored the company by naming it to the college's Hall of America's Builders. Mr. Gibbons also served as president of the Intermountain Branch of Associated General Contractors.

Mr. Gibbons was president of the Salt Lake United Fund, forerunner of the United Way, in 1962; a director for the old Walker Bank & Trust Co. and Utah Power; and was a member of the board of governors of the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a trustee of St. Mark's Hospital and St. Mark's-Rowland Hall School, and in 1975 the school selected him as a "distinguished friend."

A private funeral service will be held for family members, who suggest donations made in his honor to Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School, the Utah Museum of Natural History or a charity of the donor's choice.
