The daughter of Gov. Cecil Andrus lost a bid for mayor in her first run for office.
Tracy Andrus, a 37-year-old owner of a women's clothing store, was defeated 42 percent to 52 percent Tuesday by Brent Coles, a city councilman who became acting mayor after Dirk Kempthorne was elected to the U.S. Senate last year. The nominally nonpartisan mayor's race was the most expensive and divisive in Boise history.
More than $225,000 was spent, with Coles tapping mostly traditional GOP sources and Andrus getting money from Democrats and some high-rolling Republicans who support her father.
ATLANTA (AP) - Martin Luther King III, the oldest son of the slain civil rights leader, lost his bid for chairman of the Fulton County Commission in an upset. Mitch Skandalakis, a 36-year-old white lawyer and former state representative, defeated King by nearly a 3-to-2 margin Tuesday.
"They said we couldn't beat Martin Luther King, the name was too big," said Skandalakis, who trailed by 18 points in the polls a week before the election. "But we got the message out - property tax relief spending out of control and corruption in government."
The 35-year-old King, a seven-year member of the commission, was apparently hurt by revelations last week that he had underpaid his federal taxes over four years. He paid $150,000 in back taxes and penalties in August.
NORTH PERRY, Ohio (AP) - Voters in this northeastern Ohio village rejected a ballot measure that would have set a zero tolerance for release of radioactivity from the Perry nuclear plant.
The measure, sponsored by an environmental group, failed 284-54 on Tuesday.
The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., the plant operator, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said the plant is safe. And the NRC said the measure would be unenforceable. Nuclear plants are under NRC jurisdiction.
