Q. Whatever happened to the wonderful man who played "Mr. Green Jeans" on the greatest kid show of my childhood, "Captain Kangaroo"? - J.T., Grand Rapids, Mich.

STATS: Mr. Green Jeans, played by Hugh Brannum, was born Jan. 5, 1910, in Sandwich, Ill. He attended Redlands (Calif.) University. He married once and has one son, actor Tom Brannum.IN EARLY YEARS: Brannum - nickname Lumpy - grew up in California and started in show business as a bass fiddle player at a small California radio station. He worked with dance bands; then, with three pals, formed "The Four Squires" and headed for New York. After the group split up, Brannum stayed with Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians, and returned to Waring after serving in the Marines, 1943-45. He wrote for Waring's TV show while also playing in the band. He was doing a New York children's TV show when he joined "Captain Kangaroo" in 1955.
