Robert Fred Rohlfing, age 74, died December 5, 1993 in Salt Lake City, Utah after a long and courageous battle with cancer (multiple myeloma). His perpetual positive attitude, winning smile, and cheerful greeting will be missed by all who knew him.
Born October 31, 1919 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Fred A. H. Rohlfing and Louie Spencer Rohlfing. Married Marjory Edna Nelson November 14, 1941. Marriage solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple December 10, 1941.Attended South High School, LDS Business College, and University of Utah. Graduated U of U in 1941. Served in U.S. Army three and a half years during World War II. Was a master sergeant, intelligence agent and chief clerk of the Ninth Service Command Security and Intelligence Division at Fort Douglas, Utah.
Prominent advertising executive for 32 years. Joined Gillham Advertising, Inc. in 1946. Named vice president in 1950 and senior vice president in 1972. Illness forced disability retirement in 1978. Previously employed by KSL Radio and by Bonneville, Ltd.
Talented pianist, musician and entertainer. Member Local 104, American Federation of Musician and entertainer. Member Local 104, American Federation of Musicians. Played piano in several dance bands. Was a leader of his own dance orchestra for 10 years.
Active member LDS Church. High priest in Parleys Third Ward. Was a member of the Salt Lake Parleys Stake High Council for over 10 years. Other church callings included high priest group leadership, ward paper editor, choir president, ward MIA superintendent and counselor, ward Sunday School superintendent and counselor. Active involved i 16 LDS roadshows and countless musical programs.
Member Salt Lake Country Club. Member Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Honorary life member, Utah Advertising Federation.
Civic, social and professional activities included: president, Salt Lake Advertising Club (Now Utah Advertising Federation); district vice president and secretary, Advertising Association of the West (now American Advertising Federation); member, Salt Lake area Chamber of Commerce; director, Salt Lake Jaycees; director, Betty Business Bureau of Greater Salt Lake; director, Young Audiences, Inc.; president, Ambassador Athletic Club; director and vice president, Salt Lake Country Club. Former member Oakridge Country Club.
Survived by wife, Marjory; two children, John Nelson Rohlfing and Thomas Robert Rohlfing (Laurel); two grandchildren, Bryan Thomas Rohlfing (Cory) and Amy Rohlfing; one great-grandchild, Ethan Bryan Rohlfing; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Lois C. Rohlfing, Elder Russell M. Nelson, Enid N. DeBirk, and Robert H. Nelson.
He was preceded in death by brother, Spencer D. Rohlfing.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 10, 1993 at 12 noon, at the Parleys Third Ward chapel, 2615 E. Stringham Ave. Viewing Thursday, December 9, from 6-8 p.m. at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South and 10:30 a.m. prior to services Friday. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery.
