Ralph McInerny, a leading American philosopher and author of the "Father Dowling" mystery stories, will speak Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 331 E. South Temple, to inaugurate the 1993 expanded McDougall Public Lecture Series.

McInerny will present "When Does Art Become Immoral?" and probe the need for authors to explore, present and describe all kinds of human actions and situations. He will analyze the ongoing debate over the distinction between legitimate artistic expression and pornography.Delmont Oswald, executive director of the Utah Humanities Council, will respond to McInerny's lecture and conduct a public discussion.

McInerney, a Michael P. Grace Professor of Medieval Studies and director of the Jacques Maritain Center at Notre Dame University, earned his doctorate from Laval University in Canada. Since then he has received various fellowships including Fulbright, National Endowment for the Humanities and National Endowments for the Arts.
