Richard D. Kays, age 51, passed away Monday, February 15, 1993 at his home.
He was born March 18, 1941 a son of Walter J. and Clara Vaughn Kays, in Meadville, Pennsylvania where he lived until he joined the U.S. Army and trained as a paratrooper. He served with the elite Special Forces (Green Berets) for three tours in the jungles of Vietnam, where he was awarded a Silver Star, two bronze stars, several Purple Hearts, and Vietnam Campaign Medal, but his most prized award was the Combat Infantryman's Badge.Married to Mercedes McFarland in Denver; later divorced. He married Sandra C. Irving in February 1980. He was extremely fond of animals and had 10 cats - the most precious in his sight being "Miss Blackie". Avid sports fisherman and loved the outdoors.
Survived by wife, Sandra; three sons, Richard, David, and Harold; a daughter, Clara of Denver, CO; a step-daughter, Mrs. Jody (Ron) Anderson; step-son, George Irving; two step-grandchildren, Stephanie and Melissa Andersen of West Valley City, UT; sister, Kathleen Natale; nephew Dennis Kays of PA; and brother, Jack Kay; as well as many nephews and nieces. Preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Bonnie, Bea, and Dorothy; and brothers, Al, Art, and Harold.
Visitation for family and friends at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Saturday, February 20th, 12-4 p.m. with cremation to follow.
