Taking advantage of one of the biggest movie sensations of the year, Vintage Books is planning to publish "The Crying Game and Other Fictions," a trade paperback original by Neil Jordan, the screenwriter and director of the critically acclaimed and commercially successful movie "The Crying Game."

The book will include the movie's original screenplay as well as a short novel called "The Dream of a Beast" (first published by Random House in 1983) and a group of short stories called "Night in Tunisia," which was popular and praised in Britain and had limited distribution here in 1980 when it was published as a hardcover by George Braziller.Given the popularity of the movie, people could learn its much-discussed and sheltered secret story twist sooner by buying the book, which is to be published in time for the 1993 Academy Awards.

"The Crying Game" book will join two other Vintage books that are tied to movies considered heavy Oscar contenders, "The Player," by Michael Tolkin, and "Howards End," by E.M. Forster.

The Forster book is not the official movie tie-in and is one of several editions capitalizing on the movie's popularization of the author, whose works are now in the public domain and so can be published by anyone.
