French director Louis Malle will head the jury for the 46th Cannes Film Festival.

The festival, which runs May 13-24, is rivaled only by the Academy Awards as the film world's most glittering annual event.Danish director Bille August won the 1992 best-picture Golden Palm with "The Best Intentions," a love story written by Ingmar Bergman.

Malle, 60, shared a Golden Palm award in 1956 with Jacques Cousteau for their underwater documentary, "The Silent World."

Although most of Malle's films have been shot in French, his current box-office hit, "Damage," was filmed in English.
