Although he never applied for the job, conservative firebrand Rush Limbaugh has been named honorary spokesman for the Great American Meatout, the day Americans are asked to skip eating meat for a day.

Meatout National Coordinator Dr. Alex Hershaft said Limbaugh, who routinely lambasts the Meatout and its supporters on his nationally syndicated radio and television shows, was chosen because he has done more to publicize the event "than anyone else we know, and our sense of fairness commands this recognition."The purpose of the Meatout, scheduled for March 20, the first day of spring this year, is to alert consumers to the merits of a meatless diet, Hershaft said.

Celebrities taking part this year include Doris Day, Casey Kasem, Elvira, Kevin Nealon, Sara Gilbert, River Phoenix and Cesar Chavez.
