Davy Jones, lead singer of The Monkees, wants to help save England's horses from cruel attacks by vandals.
More than 30 horses have been stabbed, clubbed, shot at with air guns and attacked with corrosive liquids in southern England during the past year, police said. One horse died of stab wounds and another was later put to death because it was so badly hurt.Police reported about two dozen attacks in the southern county of Hampshire, where Jones, 47, lives near the market town of Fareham.
Jones, who sang with the 1960s pop group, helped launch a "Horsewatch" program Thursday. Hundreds of horse owners have been recruited to keep an eye on one another's horses, said coordinator Sally Grover.
