Lt. Gov. Butch Otter avoided jail Monday after his conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol but was fined nearly $700, lost his driver's license and will perform 72 hours of community service.

He started on that job immediately, lecturing reporters outside the Ada Courthouse that they needed to stress to people that they don't have to be drunk to be dangerous when they drive."If I have learned nothing else from this experience, it is that you don't have to be drunk. . . . One drink can impair you. If one drink will impair you, you ought not to drive," he said.

Otter, 50, is in his second term as lieutenant governor.
