A May 3 sentencing hearing has been set for a former Logan man who pleaded guilty to abuse that led to blindness and brain damage for his three-month-old son.

Defense attorney Robert Gutke requested the hearing on behalf of his client, Peter Gunter, who pleaded guilty March 8 to second-degree felony child abuse.Prosecutors allege Gunter, 22, threw his child face down on the floor. The infant - now in foster care - suffered permanent brain damage and is now blind, according to a medical report.

Gutke said Monday that he will call at least four witnesses to testify at the hearing next month before 1st District Judge Gordon Low.

In exchange for Gunter's guilty plea, prosecutors agreed not to file homicide or murder charges against him should the child die from his injuries. The plea bargain also stipulates that charges will not be brought against Gunter in two other incidents involving child abuse for which he was being investigated.
