Sterling Grundy Callahan, age 76, died April 7, 1993 in Provo, Utah..

He was born in Loa, Utah on June 23, 1916 to William Henry and Frances Grundy Callahan. He married Rebecca Morrow on September 5, 1943 in Arlington, Virginia; their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in 1945.Sterling moved to Provo in 1927. He was educated in Provo City Schools and received a B.A. from BYU in music. He received an M.A. from George Washington University in education and a Doctorate from the University of Virginia in education.

He served a mission for the LDS Church in East Germany prior to World War II. He is a veteran of World War II, having served five years in Military Intelligence in Washington D.C.

Sterling moved back to Provo in 1953. There he was a professor of Secondary Education at Brigham Young University, and served as department chairman. He published a best selling textbook, "Successful Teaching In Secondary Schools", in 1966. He retired in 1972.

He was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in ward priesthood leadership, teaching and music. He enjoyed travel while at BYU and directed tours to Europe and around the world. He held a lifelong love of music, playing bass violin with the Utah Symphony. He enjoyed ham radio and creative writing in retirement. He was also active in the Multiple Sclerosis Society, having suffered with M.S. for 40 years.

Sterling is survived by his wife, one daughter, Jane Ann Coats, a son-in-law, John M. Coats, Salt Lake City; three grandchildren, Jacqueline Scott, John Mitchell, Patrick Sterling; one brother, William Guy Callahan, Provo, Utah and one sister, Betty Wagstaff, Orem, Utah. Preceded in death by a son, Scott Morrow Callahan.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 10, 1993 at 11 a.m. in the Pleasant View Fourth Ward Chapel, 2900 North 659 East, Provo. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church. Interment: Provo City Cemetery.
