The Detroit Tigers wiped out Minnesota again Friday night, winning 8-0 behind David Wells to send the Twins to their eighth straight loss.

Detroit swept a three-game series at the Metrodome last weekend, outscoring the Twins 45-10, including margins of 17-1 and 16-5.Minnesota has been outscored 85-19 during its losing streak. The Twins lost 11-0 at Baltimore on Thursday.

Wells (4-0), signed as a free agent on April 3 after clearing waivers with Toronto, allowed four hits in seven innings. Greg Gohr pitched two hitless innings to finish the combined shutout.

The win also moved Sparky Anderson into sixth place on the all-time list of winningest managers. He now has 2,011 triumphs, one more than Leo Durocher. The first-place Tigers have won 13 of their last 16 games.

Willie Banks (2-1), the first of four Minnesota pitchers, gave up five runs, only three of which were earned, on seven hits and two walks in four innings.

Red Sox 6, Angels 1

At Boston, John Valentin, batting .077 entering the game, hit two homers to drive in five runs as Boston defeated California. Valentin hit a two-run homer in the second inning and a three-run shot in the fourth. Three of Valentin's four hits this season have been home runs.

Yankees 3, Mariners 0

At New York, Melido Perez shut down Seattle for the second time in a week and Jim Leyritz homered and drove in all three runs, leading New York past Seattle.

Perez, who blanked the Mariners on two hits for nine innings in Seattle last Saturday but wound up with a no-decision, pitched four-hit ball for eight-plus innings for his first victory of the season.

Athletics 8, Indians 2

At Cleveland, Ruben Sierra and Terry Steinbach each hit three-run homers in the 10th inning as Oakland beat Cleveland.

The 10th-inning power display gave the A's their first road win in five tries this season. The loss was Cleveland's fourth in a row.

Orioles 12, Royals 5

At Baltimore, Leo Gomez homered and tied his career-high with four RBIs as Baltimore routed Kansas City, the Orioles' season-best third straight victory.

Mark McLemore had two hits and scored three runs for the Orioles, who have amassed 31 runs in their last three games after averaging just 3.4 runs in the first 18 games of the season.

White Sox 10, Blue Jays 2

At Chicago, Frank Thomas hit a grand slam and drove in five runs as Chicago trounced Toronto for for its fifth straight victory.

It was the fourth time Thomas has knocked in five runs in a game, the last coming on June 24, 1991, against Seattle. It was his second career grand slam.

Brewers 5, Rangers 4

At Arlington, Texas, Greg Vaughn's go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning inning helped Milwaukee beat Texas.

With Texas leading 4-3, Vaughn hit his fourth homer of the season into the left-field seats off reliever Bob Patterson (1-1) after Darryl Hamilton singled.

National League

Astros 11, Pirates 2

At Houston, Jeff Bagwell hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Eddie Taubensee added a two-run shot in the seventh to break open a close game, leading the Houston Astros to victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The win was the fourth in a row for Houston and kept them in first place in the National League West.

Braves 3, Cardinals 2

At Atlanta, Damon Berryhill hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 11th to end Atlanta's five-game losing streak - its longest in nearly two years.

Berryhill's second homer of the season came with one out on Rob Murphy's (1-1) first pitch to him. Mike Stanton (1-1) got the victory by pitching the top of the 11th.

Rockies 6, Marlins 2

At Miami, Andres Galarraga hit a three-run homer and Armando Reynoso pitched a six-hitter in his first game with Colorado, ending the Marlins' three-game winning streak.

Reynoso (1-0) struck out four, walked two and allowed only one earned run in pitching his first complete game in seven career starts.

Cubs 7, Reds 3

At Cincinnati, Mark Grace drove in three runs with a single and two sacrifice flies as Chicago snapped a three-game losing streak.

Heathcliff Slocumb (1-0), recalled Thursday from Class AAA Iowa, took over for starter Frank Castillo in the third and got the win. He allowed just one hit in 22/3 innings.

Tim Belcher (1-3) took the loss.

Padres 7, Mets 6

At San Diego, Tony Gwynn had his fifth five-hit game of his career and drove in three runs, including the go-ahead RBI in the eighth inning, as the San Diego Padres beat slumping New York to send the Mets to their sixth straight loss.

Anthony Young (0-3) retired the first two batters before walking Darrell Sherman. Rookie Ricky Gutierrez followed with his fourth hit of the game to send the runner to third, and Gwynn then beat out an infield single to deep second. It was Gwynn's second five-hit game this season, raising his average to .295.

Giants 5, Expos 2

At San Francisco, Matt Williams hit his National League-leading eighth home run and went 3-for-4, leading the San Francisco Giants to victory over the Montreal Expos.

Williams homered off Chris Nabholz in the third, driving the ball into the same spot in the left-field bleachers where he hit one Thursday.

Phillies 7, Dodgers 6

At Los Angeles, Darren Daulton drove in three runs and hit a tie-breaking two-run homer in the eighth inning, leading the Philadelphia Phillies past the Los Angeles Dodgers.
