$16.5 million budgeted

for Dugway germ lab

The 1994 defense budget includes $16.5 million for a new germ warfare defense lab at Dugway Proving Ground, Rep. Jim Hansen, R-Utah, says.

The Army recently issued its formal decision to build the lab after several years of hearings and public protests.

In announcing the budget request, Hansen criticized the germ lab opponents. "If they get their way, it would be putting our troops and national security at risk," he said. "The end of the Cold War has intensified, not diminished, the threat of biological warfare."
