"In the Heat of the Night" star Howard Rollins has asked that he be allowed to serve his jail term in solitary confinement. The actor surrendered Thursday to Georgia authorities on charges of probation violation and failure to appear in court, stemming from three arrests last year for drunken driving, reckless driving and speeding.

He has been sentenced to 10 weeks in jail, but will be released after 35 days if his behavior is good. "It hurts, but it's a fair sentence," Rollins told an Atlanta TV station.Rockdale County Sheriff Guy Norman says Rollins requested to do his time in solitary. Is the actor worried about his fellow inmates? "He just likes his solitude," the sheriff said. "He just wants to be by himself."
