"The Storytellers," a multimedia installation by Susan Hyde Bland, will be featured at the Art Access Gallery from Friday, May 7. through Wednesday June 30. Interwoven in the 10 quilts she has created are stories by 40 modern-day women.

Bland says, "Quilting and storytelling are both ways of documenting the daily and the historical life of a community . . . I hope to remind people of the richness inherent in their own family histories and to encourage them to explore creative methods of passing on this information."Other events accompanying the installation include a panel discussion with "The Storytellers of Salt Lake City" on May 11; and lectures by Chuck Loving (May 25), Kathleen Deneris (June 1), Mary Francey (June 15), Susan Hyde Bland (June 22) and Wilfred Samuels (June 29). In addition, a community quilting event has been set for Friday, May 21, 7-9 p.m. as part of the monthly Gallery Stroll.

These activities are sponsored by Art Access/Very Special Arts Utah, the Salt Lake Art Council and the Utah Humanities Council. An opening reception has been planned for Friday, May 7. The gallery is located at 339 Pierpont Avenue. For more information, call 328-0703.

- Frank Sanguinetti, director of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, will be honored Sunday, May 9, as the recipient of the 1993 Madeleine Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts and Humanities. - Graduating senior art students are invited to apply for the Arnold Friberg Scholarship - a $2,000 scholarship including full tuition, textbooks, art supplies and materials necessary to complete two-years of art fundamentals offered through a home-study program of the Art Instruction Schools of Minneapolis, Minn. - Tony Bell, cutter of authentic Waterford crystal, will be at the downtown ZCMI Monday, May 3, to demonstrate some of his crystal-cutting techniques. He joined the Waterford factory in Ireland as an apprentice glass cutter in 1965.

- Cedar City's third annual Mayfest Artwalk will take place Thursday, May 6, from 5-8 p.m. The walk begins at the Campus Theater on Main Street; the route continues south to JC Penney and then west on Center Street to the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery, Southern Utah University. Colorful balloons along the walk will alert patrons of art displays, performances and food areas.

"The arts are important to our community," says Michelle Livermore, president and event chairwoman of the Cedar City Arts Council, "and this event allows us the opportunity to see all that Cedar City has to offer."
