An expected 2,000 athletes and 3,000 volunteers from throughout the state will gather at Brigham Young University Tuesday through Saturday (June 3-5) for the 1993 Utah Special Olympics Summer Games, and more volunteers are needed.

Stacy Rowlette, special Olympics Games director, said the Olympics have received a lot of support from volunteers, but more volunteers are needed to help officiate, serve meals, work at registration booths, work security and other tasks. Many people are needed to work security this year because the athletes will not be billeted, but they will be housed in local apartments and hotels. This is why 24-hour security is needed, Rowlette said.

Although the regular volunteer training sessions have already taken place, she said anyone can volunteer on the days of the games. They should arrive at 8 a.m.

The games will include competition in track and field, soccer, softball, cycling, equestrian events, as well as motor activities for the physically impaired athletes. Events will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Opening ceremonies will begin Thursday at 6:30 p.m., and the closing ceremonies will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday. Admission to all events is free, and the public is welcome.

More than 100 BYU students have planned this year's events.
