Mary Garner, chief executive officer of United Savings Bank, and Linda Wolcott, principal broker of Lewis and Wolcott Real Estate Inc., recently were nominated as honorary colonels of the Utah National Guard. The National Guard's Honorary Colonels Corps is a nonprofit organization comprised of about 80 people who have been honored for their business contributions to the community.

Brian Purser, a Brockbank Junior High School student, won the grand prize, a $500 savings bond, in this year's Anti-Drug Poster Calendar Contest. Salt Lake County Attorney David Yocom said 1,200 students took part in the contest. In addition to Purser, 12 first-place winners were named, all of whom will receive $300 savings bonds. They were:Sharon Bendfeldt of Mount Jordan Middle School, Mike Evans of Hunter Junior High, Taylor Evans of Clayton Intermediate, Nathan Fidler of Glendale Intermediate, Nichole Isaac of Eastmont Middle School, Steven Lutes of Bryant Intermediate, Lesli Mozaffari of Clayton Intermediate, Jason Naylor of Bryant Intermediate, Kelly Ricks of Eastmont Middle School, Jennifer Rydalch of Hunter Junior High, Eric Sohm of Eastmont Middle School and Zack Stuart of Mount Jordan Middle School.

Gordon Turner, son of Laura Gordon Gleidman of Salt Lake City, recently was awarded a Presidential Scholarship to Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Ill.

Two employees from Salt Lake City, one from Provo and one from Ogden recently were certified as legal assistants by the National Association of Legal Assistants. They are Alicia G. Head of the public defender's office in Utah County, Stacey R. Grimes from the U.S. Forest Service office in Ogden, Becci A. Booth of the Salt Lake law firm of LeBoeuf, Lamb, Leiby & MacRae, and Sharon J. Fleck of the Utah attorney general's office in Salt Lake City.

Linda M. Cunningham, assistant professor of marketing and business communication at Salt Lake Community College, is the first Utah educator to receive an Excellence Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development.

Allison Fisher, a fourth-grade student at Samuel Morgan Elementary School in Kaysville, has won a $5,000 college scholarship awarded by the National Geographic Society. Allison, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Scott Fisher of Fruit Heights, won the top prize in a national ad contest for her radio commercial on water conservation. In addition, her school will receive $5,000 in educational materials from the National Geographic Society.
