Dr. John M. Matsen, University of Utah vice president for health sciences and chairman of the board of Associated Regional and University Pathologists, is the recipient of the 1993 Sonnenwirth Memorial Award from the American Society for Microbiology.

The award is given to a clinical microbiologist for exceptional leadership in the profession. Matsen received the award May 19 in Atlanta where he delivered the Sonnenwirth Lecture.The award was established in memory of Dr. Alexander Son-nen-wirth for his broad-ranging research endeavors and commitment to the highest level of clinical service.

A professor of pathology, Matsen served as chairman of the U. School of Medicine's department of pathology for 11 years until being named vice president for health sciences in January.

A native of Salt Lake City, Matsen received his pre-medical education at Brigham Young University and the University of California at Los Angeles, where he also earned his medical degree.
