Gov. Mike Leavitt recently presented $10,000 checks to 20 Utah schools in the annual Governors Award for Excellence program that was initiated by his predecessor, Norm Bangerter.

This year's winners received checks during a ceremony at Northwest Middle School. It was the final year for the program, which will be replaced next year with Leavitt's own Centennial Schools project.The schools recognized for excellence this year, with their districts, were Beacon Heights Elementary, Salt Lake; Bennion Elementary, Granite; Cedar South Elementary, Iron; Delta North Elementary, Millard; Eureka Elementary, Tintic; Granger High School, Granite; Hartvigsen Special Education School, Granite; Highland Elementary, Alpine; Lincoln Elementary, Salt Lake.

McKinley Elementary, Box Elder; Monticello High School, San Juan; North Sevier High School, Sevier; Northwest Middle School, Salt Lake; Olympus Junior High School, Granite; Rock Canyon Elementary, Granite; Rolling Meadows Elementary, Granite; Springville Junior High School, Nebo; W. Russel Todd School, Uintah; Wasatch Elementary, Provo; and Washington Elementary, Salt Lake.
