A Weber County youth fell to his death while hiking along Waterfall Canyon in the mountains east of Ogden.

Sheriff's Lt. Terry Shaw said Paul Schofield, 16, the son of Kent and Robyn Schofield, was pronounced dead at the scene when reached by rescue workers about 6 p.m. Wednesday. The teenager was hiking with Shane Zarkou and Jeremy Shu-felt, both 15, above the Mount Ogden golf course.

The three Weber High School students were walking down the trail at 2 p.m. when Schofield decided to take a rocky shortcut. He was sitting on a ledge when a nearby rock fall startled him and caused him to lose his balance and fall, Zarkou said.
