Salman Rushdie made a surprise appearance before 72,000 rock fans at a London concert by the band U2.
The author's voice was piped over the speakers Wednesday night at Wembley Stadium, and he appeared to be talking by telephone with lead singer Bono."I'm closer than you think," he said, and walked on stage.
Rushdie has been under guard since 1989, when the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini called on Muslims to kill him for his novel "The Satanic Verses." Khomeini called the book blasphemous.
