"Swimsuit Optional," read the signs formerly posted at beaches in the San Diego area. Now they are the top sellers at San Diego's City Store, which offers salvaged items such as street signs, parking meters and old jail locks.

The original store is located in the Municipal Building; a second outlet has opened in a downtown mall. The project, which started up last November as a public-private partnership, has already turned a profit, say Governing Magazine.
