Dino and Michael Moncada are brothers who grew up in the Ogden area and are suspected of shooting at an Ogden police officer last week.

The brothers are considered career criminals. Both have served a number of years in the Utah State Prison system. Dino Moncada was paroled in July 1992. By September, he had absconded parole and fled to Clovix, N.M., where he has family. Michael Moncada was paroled in March 1993. By June, he also had absconded for New Mexico.

A fugitive investigation developed information that the brothers had recently returned to Ogden and were traveling together. On Aug. 19, 1993, an Ogden police officer responded about 1:30 a.m. to a report of an aggravated assault in progress. As he approached the location, the officer noticed two men crossing the street, then separate and begin to run in opposite directions.

The officer was able to follow one man and ordered him to stop. The other ran in a direction behind the officer. Suddenly, several shots were fired from a distance behind the officer, who quickly took cover and called for assistance. The officer was not injured, but some rounds struck his patrol car. Officers later searched the area and found property that belonged to an auto body shop. The FBI warns that the brothers should be considered armed and dangerous. Utah Crime Solvers will pay up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and binding over of the suspect in this case.
