Phillip Ross Gowans, age 90, died August 4, 1993 in Tooele, Utah.
He was born in Tooele, Utah, to James and Alice DeLaMare Gowans, August 22, 1902. He married Merle Christine Bird, January 9, 1929 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He was an active member of the LDS Church and served diligently in many capacities. He served a mission in Minnesota, served as Bishop as the Tooele South Ward and as a member of the Tooele Stake Presidency for 20 years.He was retired employee of Utah Power & Light, having worked 34 years until retirement in 1967. He was elected and served as Tooele County Commissioner for 16 years. During that time he was chairman of the Ration Board during World War II.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Jim (Patsy), Hugh (Gwen), Don (Doreen); daughter, Karen Oldroyd; 25 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; sisters, Cerola Pehrson, Vernon, Utah; Lucille "Peg" Anderson, American Fork; brother, Floyd Gowans, Orem, Utah. Preceded in death by his parents, wife, Merle, son, Kenneth, and six brothers and sisters, Beatrice Marsden, Hugh Gowans, Della Rockwell, Frank Gowans, Annie Rhone and Maude Mohr.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 7, 1993 at 11 a.m. in the Tooele 4th-14th LDS Ward, 192 West 2nd South. Friends may call at Tate Mortuary, Friday, 6 to 8 p.m and one hour prior at the church on Saturday. Interment: Tooele City Cemetery.
