Christoph Eschenbach, music director of the Houston Symphony, has been awarded the 1993 Leonard Bernstein Award by the Pacific Music Festival.

The award, a crystal trophy, is presented to a musician deemed to carry on the legacy of the late Leonard Bernstein, founder of the Pacific Music Festival. Eschenbach served as co-director of the festival this year. This season will be Eschenbach's sixth with the Houston Symphony. He is also a noted pianist: He's recorded the complete piano sonatas of Mozart, in addition to several concerti in the double role of conductor and pianist.

Bernstein founded the Pacific Music Festival in 1990. It's an early summer festival modeled on the Tanglewood Festival, featuring classical music performances and workshops together with programs in jazz, electronic, contemporary, folk and traditional music.
