The Loge Gallery on the mezzanine of the Pioneer Memorial Theatre will spotlight mixed-media abstract landscapes by John W. Wood from January 5-22. Titled "Conversations," the show reflects the artist interest in the exchange of ideas which occurs between the works of art and the viewer.
"I'm interested in the way the placement of multiple images and ideas in close proximity affects the information shared," Wood said. "I want to see what happens with the build-up of information - how the images collide against each other."He says he's not interested in the landscape itself as a genre; rather in its use of as a metaphor for personal experiences. "I see it as a medium to define a color-and-light experience."
This free exhibit is open to the public Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday mornings until noon. Theater patrons may view the exhibit before, during intermission and after PTC's production of "Conversations With My Father."
- BYU's Brimhall Gallery will feature the works of Ray and Marie Kirkland, two of the last living bromoil photographers in the world. Residing in Bountiful, they are in their 90s. They have produced photographs for nearly 66 years, winning more than 500 awards.
The beautifully crafted bromoil transfer prints created by the Kirklands are reminiscent of an aesthetic movement and philosophy from the early 20th century. Originating in Europe, the process was introduced in the United States around 1900. It offers a wide range of media effects.
The exhibit will open Friday, Jan. 7, with an opening reception from 6-8 p.m. and remain on display through Jan. 27 in the Brimhall Design Gallery located in the George Brimhall Building, BYU campus.
- Fourteen BYU design students submitted spot art work to accompany an article in the prestigious national design publication Step-By-Step. The magazine's board returned critiques of all 14 works, but selected Daniel Johnson's illustration of a sharply dressed man in a straw hat and sunglasses as the one that best caught the spirit of the article.
A senior, Johnson was also honored last spring for his illustrative work by the Society of Illustrators.
- Brian Lee Durfee, another illustration student at BYU, was selected recently from international participants as one of 29 winners in the ninth annual L. Ron Hubbard Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contest. The prize-winning stories and illustrations will be published in "L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future, Volume IX." Durfee's artwork will accompany a fictional piece titled "The Monitor."
