A trail of smoke from a bush fire hangs over Heathcote, Australia, 10 miles south of Sydney, Thursday. More than 100 fires, fed by hot weather and high winds, raged out of control, causing the worst fire emergency in 50 years in New South Wales. Firefighters gave up trying to extinguish the blazes and concentrated on saving people and buildings. Three people have been killed since Sunday; hundreds have been evacuated.
