KUER (FM-90.1) will air the "War of the Worlds" at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, in a special pre-Halloween presentation. This new version will star Leonard Nimoy, Brent Spiner, Gates MacFadden, Jonathan Frakes and John de Lancie.
De Lancie, who was "Q" on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," directs this new show, with the idea of updating the H.G. Wells classic - infamously adapted by Orson Welles for radio in 1938 - by using today's best science fiction stars. In his new version, he uses the voices of the four other "Star Trek" actors, who of course portrayed Spock, Data, Beverly Crusher and William Riker. If you've ever heard the original Welles production that aired 56 years ago - also on Oct. 30 - you know how unrealistic it sounds by today's broadcast standards. Still, it fooled a lot of people into believing the Martians were actually invading Earth from New Jersey. Panic and riots were the result.
