American Fork High School's marching band reigned on Mountain Crest's parade Saturday night, taking top prize in the open-class category at the inaugural Bridgerland Band Invitational.
Featuring 16 bands from the Intermountain region, the Brid-ger-land Band Invitational - held at Utah State University's Romney Stadium - is the first band competition of the 1994 season. Nebo School District hosts a competition Tuesday at Payson High School.American Fork also took the prizes for outstanding percussion, outstanding music and outstanding general effect, with selections from "The New World Symphony" in a field show featuring Russian costumes.
Mountain Crest High School - which sponsored the competition - took second place in open class, followed by Davis High in third place.
Mountain Crest also won the outstanding auxiliary and outstanding visual trophies in open class.
Springville High School took first place in the Class A division, followed by Blackfoot and West Jordan High.
Idaho Falls High School won the outstanding music trophy.
Tooele swept the Class B category with a first-place trophy and outstanding auxiliary prize as well as the outstanding visual and general effect awards.
Spanish Fork took second in Class B along, adding with that the outstanding percussion award. Weber High School took third. Ben Lomond High School won outstanding music for Class B.
American Fork High School drum majors, David Blackhurst, Jeni Monson and Kristen Standifird were named outstanding drum majors with 95.5 points. Davis High School trio - Gary Jackson, Brent Dastrup and Trisha Topham - was second followed by Blackfoot Bronco drum majors Jennifer Hillam and Beth Eddington.
