A man with eight felony convictions for drunken driving was sentenced to life in prison for running over a police officer who was helping a stranded motorist.
A prosecutor likened Eugene Standerford to "a drunken Energizer bunny.""He keeps going and going and going . . . and we paid a terrible price for that," Richard Alpert said Monday after a jury gave Standerford the maximum punishment for vehicular homicide.
Standerford, 56, must serve at least 30 years before being considered for parole.
Standerford's Cadillac struck Alan Chick last December as Chick stood on the shoulder of I-820, helping a woman whose pickup truck had stalled.
Tests showed Standerford had a blood-alcohol level of 0.15 percent. The legal limit in Texas is 0.10 percent.
