With winter comes the need for common sense when contemplating outdoor travel, say Uinta National Forest officials.

- Remember to notify someone of your trip, your planned route of travel and your estimated time of return.- Don't travel in a storm. Turn back if the weather turns bad. If visibility is reduced or the area is unfamiliar, follow your tracks back out.

- Avoid avalanche terrain. Avoid thin ice or unsafe river crossings.

- Take the proper equipment with you, including extra warm clothing, food, matches and first aid supplies.
