The 15th-ranked BYU men's golf team shot even par Saturday afternoon to win the International Intercollegiate by two stokes over 19th-ranked Houston.
Brodie Berg fired a 71 to finish in third place with a 214 total in the 22nd annual tournament hosted by Rice University on the Club Campestre course.Eric Rustand shot 73 for 11th place while Brad Sutterfield had 72 to tie for 12th with teammate Todd Pence at 219. The fourth score which counted Saturday was a 72 by Lonnie Damon, who finished at 225.
BYU's even-par 288 score gave it a three-day total of 865 to edge Houston, which shot three-under par 285 to move up from fourth place in the final round.
Baylor was third at 871 and California, the leader after each of the first two rounds, dropped to fourth at 874. Tulane was fifth at 877 followed by North Texas 881, Texas Tech 882, South Alabama 885, Rice 892, Lamar 898, Weber State at Club Campestre at 909, Ohio 920, Stephen F. Austin 930, Air Force and Missouri at 934, Central Connecticut 940 and Texas-Pan American 945.
The victory in the first outing of the spring season gives BYU a win in three of its six tournaments this school year to go along with a second and a third.
"We're really excited to go from fifth after the first day," said coach Bruce Brockbank. "Our 281 Friday was really a spectacular effort and then we survived some bad holes in the middle of each nine in the closing round."
