Kearns residents don't want a local club to be given a license that would allow semi-nude dancing.

Elwyn Hess, member of the Kearns Town Council, told Salt Lake County commissioners on Monday that he opposes granting a sexually oriented business license to Club DJs at 3849 West 5400 South. Hess said the area already has problems with gangs and sexually oriented crimes."At this point it would put more fuel on the fire," he said.

Another Kearns resident told commissioners during their regular meeting that she was concerned about sexually motivated crimes in the area and attributed to them to "lack of control of sexual desires." She said that the semi-nude dancing leads to delinquency of adults and could lead to delinquency of young people, particularly those that attend a nearby junior high school.

Owner Richard H. Courville said his business needs the license to remain competitive with other area clubs. He said the club previously had a sexually oriented license for seven years. Cindy Murray said the dancing would occur at night and only those 21 years and older would be allowed into shows.

Commissioner Brent Overson said he would vote against the license but raised the question of whether the commission has authority to rule on licenses. Commissioners will hear the matter next Wednesday after getting a legal opinion and a report from the sheriff's office.
